Jump & Platform

Nitrome's retro climber J-J-Jump: leap up 10 levels with limited jumps before the rising water catches you. Free to play in your browser.

J-J-Jump is a retro-styled climbing platformer from Nitrome, the studio behind Bad Ice-Cream and Double Edged. The idea fits in one sentence: get upward before the rising water gets you. There is no time to stand and think, because the flood keeps climbing whether or not you move.

What makes it different from most jumpers is that your jumps are limited. You cannot just mash the jump key and bounce skyward forever, so every leap has to land somewhere useful. A round is a constant trade between speed, because the water is always behind you, and care, because a wasted jump can leave you stranded below the next ledge.

On Doodle Jump, that makes it a good next stop for anyone who likes vertical climbing. Doodle Jump itself is an endless, forgiving bounce. J-J-Jump is a set of 10 distinct levels with a hard fail state, so it feels more like a puzzle you solve at speed.

How to play

Use the left and right arrow keys to move and the up arrow to jump. That is all of it. Poki lists the game as desktop only, so it needs a physical keyboard, and the catalogue's older mention of WASD, mouse and touch controls does not apply to this build.

Each level asks you to hop through to the top. Fall into the water and the run ends, so the real goal is to keep your lead over it while saving jumps for the gaps that need them.

Tips

  • Walk when you can. Ordinary movement costs nothing, so save jumps for places where a walk will not get you up.
  • Look one platform ahead before you leap, so you are not committing to a jump with no landing in sight.
  • Do not stall. A long pause to plan is more dangerous here than a slightly imperfect route.
  • If a level goes wrong early, restart rather than limping on with too few jumps left.

Similar games on Doodle Jump

Helix Jump is also about careful vertical progress, but it is a one-button drop rather than a climb. Ovo 2 and OvO game are precision platformers where timing and momentum matter more than a rising hazard. Bird Jumper is another vertical hopper if you want something lighter after the pressure of the flood.

It suits short sessions at a desktop: a level takes little time, and the limited jumps keep each attempt tense.
