Getaway Shootout is a pixelated, rooftop-hopping race for two. Both players start on the same stretch of city and the goal is simple: reach the escape point before your rival does. Nobody walks there. You hop between rooftops, dodge incoming bullets, and use weapons and power-ups to slow the other player down. The game was made by New Eich Games.

A round is short and tense. One badly timed hop can cost you the lead, and the same goes for your opponent. That makes it a good fit for anyone on this site who likes the one-more-try feel of Doodle Jump or OvO, but wants to play against a person instead of chasing a high score alone.

How to play

The controls are the part that surprises people, because the game is built for two players on one keyboard and each player gets three keys on their own side.

• Player one: W jumps left, E jumps right, R fires your power-up.
• Player two: I jumps left, O jumps right, P fires your power-up.

You never steer directly. Your character moves by jumping, so every press commits you to a direction. Pick the gap you are aiming for before you press. Touch screens are listed as supported, but the keyboard layout is clearly what the game was designed around, so a keyboard is the better choice.

Tips

• Watch the next rooftop, not your own character. The landing matters more than the takeoff.
• Save your power-up for a moment when it can change the order, not the instant you have one.
• If you are ahead, favour safe jumps. If you are behind, a power-up is your best way back.
• Keep your fingers resting on all three of your keys. Reaching for a key costs more time than a bad jump does.
