Doom 2 — Play Free Online

Action & Shooting

Play Doom II, the classic 1994 DOS first-person shooter, free in your browser with nothing to install: find keys, fight demons and clear each map.

This is the original 1994 DOS release of Doom II: Hell on Earth, running inside the browser through a DOS emulator. There is no remake layer on top: you get the same chunky pixel graphics, the same menu screens and the same level layouts that first-person shooter fans have been learning for three decades. Load the page, wait for the emulator to unpack the game, and you are standing in the first map with a pistol.

A session is simple. You walk through a maze-like level, find coloured keycards or skull keys to open locked doors, shoot whatever is between you and the exit, and then see the end-of-level tally for kills, items and secrets. Maps are short enough to finish in a few minutes, which makes it easy to play one and stop.

It sits a little apart from the platform jumpers that make up most of Doodle Jump's catalogue. If you came for fast reflex games, this is the slower, more deliberate kind of action: you are managing ammo, health and position rather than a single jump.

How to play

The page lists the arrow keys or WASD for movement and the mouse for aiming and selecting menu entries. Because this is the DOS build, it uses the classic keyboard layout, so it is worth knowing the original bindings too:

  • Up and Down arrows walk forward and back; Left and Right arrows turn.
  • Ctrl fires the current weapon.
  • Space opens doors, presses switches and rides lifts.
  • Hold Shift to run.
  • Hold Alt with the turn keys to sidestep.
  • Number keys 1 to 7 pick a weapon.
  • Esc opens the menu, where you choose a difficulty and can adjust options.

If a key does nothing, click the game area first so the emulator has keyboard focus. WASD and mouse look depend on how the emulator maps input, so if they feel off, fall back to the arrow keys and Ctrl, which always match the original game.

From the menu, pick New Game and choose a skill level. Lower levels give you more ammo and weaker hits taken; the top levels are meant for people who already know the maps. Each level ends at an exit switch, usually behind a few locked doors.

Tips

  • Pick up the shotgun early. It is the weapon that makes the first levels manageable, and it handles most close-range enemies in one or two blows.
  • Do not stand still in the open. Strafing with Alt and the turn keys, or simply circling around a column, makes ranged enemies miss more often.
  • Save ammo for the tougher enemies and use the pistol or fists on weak ones when you can.
  • Look at the wall textures. A slightly different panel or a gap in a corridor often means a secret door, and secrets usually hide armour or ammo.
  • Take on a room from the doorway when possible, so enemies come to you one at a time.

Similar games on Doodle Jump

Most of the action here is lighter and more arcade-like. Fireboy and Watergirl is a puzzle platformer for two players where you have to cooperate, while Bloons Tower Defense 2 is about placing towers and planning rather than aiming. Ovo 2 keeps the pace of a precision platformer, with no weapons at all. Doom 2 is the one for a first-person view and a gun in your hand.

It suits a keyboard much better than a touch screen, so a laptop or desktop is the comfortable way to play. Sessions can be as short as a single map.
