Awesome Tanks 2 is a top-down tank shooter that runs in the browser with nothing to install. You drive a tank around an arena with the keyboard, aim the gun with the mouse, and try to knock out the enemy tanks before they do the same to you.

It is a different kind of session from the one-button jumpers this site is known for. Doodle Jump is about climbing and timing; here you are positioning, aiming and deciding when to advance and when to back off. Rounds are short, which makes it a good break between longer games.

How to play

Move with the arrow keys or WASD. The cannon follows the mouse cursor, and clicking fires it. Menu choices are made with the mouse as well. On a phone or tablet the page is set up for tapping and swiping instead of a keyboard, though the mouse-and-keys layout gives finer aim.

Because you steer the body of the tank and aim the gun separately, you can keep moving in one direction while your shots go somewhere else. Getting comfortable with that split is most of the learning curve.

Tips

• Keep moving. A tank that sits still is the easiest target on the screen.
• Use walls and obstacles as cover, and peek out only long enough to fire.
• Lead your shots on enemies that are moving sideways rather than aiming at where they are now.
• Retreat while you aim so that you can fire and still keep a gap between you and the nearest enemy.
