Survivor Z is a top-down zombie survival game. You steer a lone survivor around an overhead map while hordes of oddball zombies close in, and the job is simple to state and hard to finish: stay alive, thin the crowd and push on through the levels. It plays in the browser with nothing to install, and a run starts within a few seconds of loading.

The pace is closer to a shooter than to a jumper. You are always moving, always aiming, and always deciding whether to fight the group in front of you or give ground and pick up something useful. The map offers power-ups, weapons and vehicles, so the best option changes from minute to minute instead of settling into one routine.

Doodle Jump is about one-button reflexes and climbing as high as you can. Survivor Z suits the same player on a day when they want something with more to do: short rounds, a clear score of progress, and a reason to come back for one more attempt.

How to play

On a keyboard, move with the arrow keys or WASD and use the mouse to aim and to select items in menus. On a phone or tablet, tap and swipe instead. Movement and aiming are separate, so you can retreat in one direction while firing in another.

A round is a loop of surviving the current wave, collecting what the level drops, and using it against the next group. Pick up weapons and power-ups as you find them, and use a vehicle when one turns up, since it lets you cover ground and clear zombies that would otherwise surround you on foot.

Tips

1. Keep moving. Standing still to shoot is how a survivor gets surrounded; strafe and fire while backing away.
2. Fight with open space behind you, not with a wall or corner at your back where you cannot retreat.
3. Grab power-ups early in a level rather than saving a trip for later, when the crowd has grown.
4. Play the first level slowly to learn how the zombies move before you chase progress.
