Arcade & Skill

Cut The Rope Experiments is a free physics puzzle: slice ropes to swing candy into Om Nom's mouth. Play it in your browser.

Cut The Rope Experiments is a physics puzzle about one small job: get a swinging piece of candy into the mouth of the green creature, Om Nom. The candy hangs from one or more ropes, and you slice the ropes at the right moment so it swings, drops or floats to the right place.

It is a slower, thinker's game than most of what sits around Doodle Jump. There is no timer pushing you up a screen. Each level is a small contraption, and a run is a series of short attempts where you watch the candy move, work out what went wrong and try again. A few minutes is enough to clear several levels.

If you came to Doodle Jump for a game of timing and momentum, the same instinct applies here. You are judging how a swinging object will carry, not reacting to enemies.

How to play

The game is played with a pointer. With a mouse, drag across a rope to cut it. On a phone or tablet, swipe your finger across the rope. The page lists arrow keys or WASD as well, but the cutting itself is done by dragging, so keep the mouse or touchscreen handy.

A level starts with the candy hanging still. Decide which rope to cut first, because the order matters. Cutting one rope may leave the candy swinging on another, and the next cut needs to land while it is moving toward Om Nom. Stars are scattered along the candy's path, and collecting them is the optional extra goal on top of simply feeding him.

When a level goes wrong, restart it. Levels are short, so retrying is the normal way to learn how a given setup behaves.

Tips

  • Watch one full swing before you cut anything. Seeing where the candy naturally travels shows you which rope to release.
  • Do the star-collecting and the feeding as separate problems. Finish a level once to learn it, then replay it for the stars.
  • Cut at the top of a swing, when the candy is nearly still, if you want a short, predictable drop. Cut mid-swing when you want to throw it sideways.
  • Drag quickly and cleanly across the rope. A slow, hesitant drag is easier to miss on a touchscreen.

Helix Jump is also about reading motion, but it is a fast one-input descent rather than a puzzle you can pause over. Fireboy and Watergirl is the closest in spirit for puzzle fans, with routes and obstacles to work out, and it also suits two players. Bouncy Basketball is another physics-driven pick if you like watching how a bouncing object behaves.

The game runs in the browser with nothing to install, so it suits a quick break between longer games.
