Atari Breakout — Play Free Online

Arcade & Skill

Atari Breakout is a classic paddle-and-brick arcade game: bounce the ball, clear the wall and keep it in play. Play free in your browser.

Breakout is one of the oldest ideas in video games: a paddle at the bottom, a ball that never stops moving, and a wall of bricks you have to chew through one bounce at a time. Atari Breakout keeps that structure intact. There is no story and no menu maze, only a ball, a paddle and the next brick.

A session is quick and tense. The ball speeds up the longer a rally lasts, the gaps you need to aim for get narrower as the wall thins out, and one lazy return sends the ball past you. It is a good fit if you came to Doodle Jump for a game where one small mistake ends the run and you immediately want to try again.

The game loads in the page and runs in the browser with nothing to install, so it works on a laptop, a Chromebook or a phone.

How to play

You control the paddle along the bottom edge. The listed controls are the arrow keys or WASD to move, the mouse to aim and select, and tap and swipe on a phone. Try the keyboard and the mouse both and keep whichever feels steadier to you.

The aim of each round is simple: bounce the ball back up with the paddle and break every brick before you lose the ball. Each brick you hit disappears, and the ball rebounds off whatever it touches, so the path it takes after each hit is what you are really playing with.

Tips

  • Where the ball lands on the paddle decides where it goes next. Meeting it with the edge of the paddle sends it off at a sharper angle than meeting it with the middle, so use that to steer shots toward the bricks you still need.
  • Stay near the middle of the screen between hits instead of parking in a corner. A paddle that is already centred can reach either side in time.
  • Watch the ball, not the bricks. Most lost balls come from looking at the target while the ball is still on its way down.
  • Clearing a channel up one side is worth the effort. Once the ball gets behind the wall it can break several bricks on its own while you wait.

If you like the reflex and aiming feel here, Bouncy Basketball is another game built around one bouncing object and quick timing. Helix Jump swaps the paddle for a ball you guide down a tower, and Doodle Jump itself is the vertical jumper the site is named after. Atari Breakout is the one to pick when you want a classic, fixed-screen challenge with a clear finish line.

It suits short sessions well: a round can be played in a few minutes between other things, and starting again costs nothing.
