Grindcraft is a Minecraft-themed clicker game with the 3D world stripped away. There is no building and no wandering around: you start with your bare fists, hit a tree for wood, and slowly climb the crafting ladder until you are making iron tools, mining deeper and automating the work. It was made by Playsaurus, the studio behind the Clicker Heroes games, and the idle-game DNA shows.

A session is calm and incremental. You click, resources trickle in, you craft the next tool, and that tool makes the next batch of resources faster. It suits a short break or a tab you keep open in the background, which is a different rhythm from the jumpers and runners that fill the rest of Doodle Jump's catalogue.

How to play

The game is driven by the mouse. The grind happens in four click boxes: overworld, mine, food and mobs. What turns up in each box depends on the gear you own, so a resource such as lava will not appear until you have the right tool to collect it. Rarer resources show up less often, which is why the early game feels slow and the middle game picks up.

Click to gather, then open the crafting list. Hovering over a craftable item shows the resources it needs, so you can see exactly how far away the next upgrade is. On a phone, tapping does the same job as clicking.

Tips

• Craft wooden tools like the axe and spade first. They make every later resource easier to collect.
• Check the hover tooltips before you spend anything, so you are not using up materials a better item needs.
• Look for ways to automate. Once resources arrive without clicking, you can leave the game running and come back to a bigger stockpile.
• Gear decides what appears in each click box, so if a resource is missing, work out which tool unlocks it.

Grindcraft has little in common with Doodle Jump's reflex-driven games. Helix Jump and Bird Jumper reward quick timing, while Bloons Tower Defense 2 is the closest in spirit, because you plan and build up over time. Fireboy and Watergirl and Ovo 2 are puzzle platformers where precision matters more than patience. Grindcraft is the one to open when you want progress that keeps ticking along without fast reactions.
